About Dorcus Gatlin

GEDCOM Note

Also listed as Darkes Gatlin[23.ged]

Proof for Dorcas Gatlin's parentage can be found in the will ofhermother's sister ,Dorcas Worsley Chapman 1822, Beaufort Co., NC.There it is stated that Dorcas and Zachary Gatlin are the children ofLevi Gatlin. In the 1832 estate settlement of Dorcas Gatlin's uncleBenjamin Worsley, it becomes obvious that Barbara Worsley Gatlin isLevi's widow. Hence, through these two documents the parentage ofDorcas Gatlin becomes clear.

Other researchers have ascribed Dorcas to Stephen Gatlin and MaryHarris of Greene and Pulaski Counties, GA. Stephen, as Justice of thePeace in Greene Co., did marry Dorcas and her cousin Major Gatlin inSept., 1808, but he is uncle to Dorcas and cousin to Major rather thanfather of Dorcas.

Dorcas married for the second time aft. Major's death abt. 1836. shemarried a man named John Johnson or Johnston of Leake Co., MS, just s.of her home in Attala Co. A Dorcas Johnson appears in the 1870 FedCensus of Leake(?) Co.(maybe Attala Co.)MS. She could be ourDorcas.(Ref.Melba Schochler)

Researcher Melba Schochler told me of the appearance of a Major Gatlinin the tax records of Pike Co., MS in the 1820's. Melba is alsoresponsible for making the identification of the Dorcas Gatlinmentioned in the Dorcas Worsley Chapman Will, 1822, with our Dorcas, wife of Major Gatlin. Researcher Sue Guptill is responsible forinvestigating the Chapman Will, 1822, and the Estate Settlement ofBenjamin
Worsley, 1832, and by a process of elimination identifying whichWorsley sister married which Gatlin brother. Researcher ColleenTaylor introduced us to the Dorcas Worsley Chapman Will, 1822,Beaufort Co., NC.[12.ged]
