Dorian Janse van Rensburg (1974 - 1999)

Brief overview:

Dorian (25), was shot in the head at close range, and one of his two female friends, Marisa Elizabeth du Toit (21), was also shot in the head and killed. (Jean) Audrey Myburgh who was also shot, but the bullet narrowly missed a main artery, and miraculously survived after pretending to be dead. The attack by five perpetrators took place at the Franschoek Pass viewing spot on 7th July 1999.

  • Audrey, a key witness, testified at the hearing, stating that the five men ordered that she and Marisa to jump down the cliff. When they landed a few metres below, they were both shot.
  • Heinrico Pietersen (18), Morne Lakay (23), Dawid Williams (23) and Jehan Abrahams (27) were found guilty and sentenced to two life terms for murder, and also found guilty of the attempted murder of Audrey, by Justice Deon van Zyl. He granted indemnity from prosecution to the other key witness, Patrick van Schalkwyk, a former co-accused, as Van Schalkwyk had told the truth in a spontaneous and logical way.
