About Doris Jean McLemore

Doris Jean Lamar McLemore was born April 16, 1927 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Mae Lamar of Gracemont, Oklahoma and raised by her grandparents Walter and Hushseah Lamar, along with her brother Newton. She passed from this life on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at the age of 89. Doris was a proud member of the Wichita Tribe. She graduated from Riverside Indian School with the class of 1947. After 30 years of service, she retired from Riverside Indian School; she had also worked at Concho Indian School, Ma & Pa's Cafe and at the Wichita Tribe of Oklahoma.

Doris began working with Dr. David Rood from the University of Colorado in the mid 1960's on their 40+ year adventure of preserving the Wichita language, as she was the last fluent Wichita speaker. For the last several years she and Gary McAdams have been continuing the work on preserving the Wichita language. Doris also served in numerous positions with the Wichita Service Club serving meals and honoring our Tribal Veterans. She was also an Honorary Grandparent to the Wichita Little Sisters.

Doris is preceded in death by her grandparents Walter and Husheah Lamar; mother, Mae Lamar Davis; brothers; Newton Lamar, Elliott Davis, and Emerson Davis; sister Latatia Rolon Medina; daughter Linda Carol Moody and granddaughter Mandy Jo Moody.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Doyle McLemore of Anadarko, Peggy and Steve Evans of Ft. Cobb, 5 grandchildren: Debbie Gutierrez of OKC, Damon and Kathy Evans of Texas, Jerry and Sandi Moody of MWC, Tammy and Larnardo Conley of OKC and Sarah Castillo of Anadarko, 7 great grandchildren; 1 sister Margie Tanner and special friend/sister in law Catherine Lamar, special grandson Edward Rocke Whitewolf and numerous nieces, nephews and other family relatives.

Prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the Wichita Tribe Community Building. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Rock Springs Baptist Church, north of Anadarko. Rev. Marvin Delaware will officiate. Burial will follow at Rock Springs Cemetery, Anadarko. Services are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Anadarko, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers will be Damon Evans, Jerry M Moody, Ricardo Gutierrez, Edward Rocke Whitewolf, Nacho Gallegos, Billy Rodriguez, Gabriel Castro and Dane Evans. Honorary Pallbearers: Steve Evans, Doyle McLemore, Gordon Whitewolf, Gary McAdams, Gary Don Schmidt, Michael Lamar, Walter Lamar, Jerry Joe Moody, Jose Castro, Miguel Castro and Zac Rolon Medina
