Dorothy Irene Reed, 91, of Springfield passed away unexpectedly at home July 2, 2013.

Dorothy was born August 2, 1922 in Valentine, Nebraska to Bertha & Worley Tibbles. She was the last surviving child and the 2nd of 5. The family moved from the Midwest in 1930 to Toledo, Oregon.

1940 was a busy year for Dorothy. She graduated from Toledo High School, married her husband Alvin Charles Reed on Feb. 24, 1940 in Longview, Washington, and moved to Springfield, Oregon where they sold their personal vehicle to start a family business with Alvin's father, William Luis Reed. First it was a moving company and later became a home heating business Reed's Fuel Co.

With the start of WWII, and Alvin being drafted, she stayed and worked with WL driving truck and delivering wood/sawdust to help keep the business going. Dorothy was able to join Alvin in Georgia, for a short period of time before returning back to help continue to run the business.

In May of 1944 Dorothy and Alvin welcomed their only child Gary L. Reed into their lives.

Dorothy was a very integral part of the day to day business until 2009. In 2009 the operating business of 69 years no longer became a family business.

Dorothy and Alvin enjoyed square dancing, boating and fishing with many wonderful friends. Dorothy also enjoyed bowling and spending time at her beach home, where family and friends were always welcomed.

Dorothy greatly loved her family and was blessed to see four generations.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Alvin Charles Reed. She is survived by her son, Gary Reed and wife Barbara of Eugene, Oregon; granddaughters Jamie King, husband Kevin of Watertown, SD, and Jacqueline DePaolo, husband Mark of Aubrey Texas and three great grandchildren, Katelyn Braden and Bailee. There are several other people special to Dorothy, you all know who you are.
