About Dr. Amalie Oppenheim
Amalie Pollak married in 1906 David Ernst Oppenheim, son of the secretary of the Jewish community, Joachim Oppenheim. She had graduated the Academic High School in 1899 and was one of the first women in Austria to study mathematics and physics. In 1907 their first child, Cora, was born; daughter Doris was born twelve years later (1919).
David Oppenheim was relieved of his teaching position in March 1938. His daughters Cora and Doris emigrated to Australia. But Oppenheim, who was very much rooted in Vienna, realized the danger too late, and his health prevented timely emigration. On 20 August 1942, he and his wife were deported to Theresienstadt. David Ernst Oppenehim died there on 18 Feb 1943 due to the inhuman conditions. Mrs. Oppenheim survived.
