About Dr. (CSA) Harvey Black

Dr. Harvey Black was the son of Alexander Black and Elizabeth McDonald. His grandfather, John Black, was one of the founders of Blacksburg, Virginia. He married Mary Irby Kent, daughter of Germanicus Kent. At the beginning of the Civil War, in April 1861, Dr. Black enlisted in the 4th Virginia Regiment. He became the brigade surgeon and the surgeon in charge of the Field Hospital, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Harvey Black was one of four surgeons involved in the amputation of Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's arm after he had been wounded at Chancellorsville. After the Civil War Dr. Harvey Black helped found Virginia "Tech" Polytechnic Institute.
