About Dr. Franklin Lafayette Riley, Jr.

Got his PhD in history from Johns Hopkins University in 1896 where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He was professor of history at Univesity of Mississippi and at Washington & Lee, where he died and is buried.

Written upin Who's Who 1928-1929.

Apparently was one of the biggest "characters" in the family. Many stories ve been told about him. He was a fanatic about cleanliness and would take his napkin and wipe off his silverware and plate at the table before eating. According to his wife Fanny, they were once guests of Wodrow Wilson at the White House. Frank did his plate-cleaning act there and Fanny almost fainted!


Franklin Riley was a founder and trustee of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Riley taught history at the University of Mississippi and Washington and Lee, and wrote and edited several books on the state's history.
