With his family, he immigrated to South Carolina before 1685, returned to Great Britain (Scotland) to complete his education. While there, he studied medicine. By late 1697, he returned to Charleston where he had inherited from his father a brick house and medical instruments.
George Smith owned property in Craven Co; Charleston and Georgetown SC; New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His main estate was “Palmettoes” on the Cooper River. He was a Captain in the Militia in 1702; elected to Assemblies from Berkeley and Craven Co 1698, 1702, 1703, 1707 and 1708; was Public Receiver in 1707 and on the Grand Council 1708. He was Tax Assessor and was Justice of Peace for Berkeley Co 1734.
