About Dr. Isaac Raschkes

Dr. Isaac Raschkes was a medical Doctor and a surgeon. He was born in Lodz, Poland, but was raised in Bialystok, Poland. When he was 23 he left to study in Berlin, Germany and enjoyed the post WW1 era in the lively Berlin. He graduated from the Friedrich-Wilhelms Universitat in Berlin ( Humboldt Universitat today), worked in Moabit Jewish Hospital ( Moabit Krankhaus) with Prof. Markus and opened a private practic/clinic in Goethe str. He enjoyed being in the big city. His brothers, 5 in number, joined him and even his father, Chaim lived in Berlin then. Isaac adored art, played chess on a regular basis and had an extended social life. It was not until 1933, when Hitler and the Nazi party became in power, that it occured to Isaac to leave Berlin, but clever enough to see the upcoming future of the Jewry, he decided with his family, to go to Palestine, the place of the Jewish people. He left with his family to Kaunas, where he married Liuba Chaviva Tomshinsky, and together they continued to Tel Aviv. In Tel Aviv the couple have established a home. They lived on Lilienblum str., then Pinsker st. and finally settled in 15, Hess st., where their only daughter, Hanita, was born. Isaac was a very warm person and loved to assist all kinds of people. He had an open heart, a good sense of humor ,but was very professional when necessary. He joined Prof. Markus, with whom he worked in Berlin, and together they worked in Hadassah hospital on Balfour st., he also worked in Assuta hospital and ran a private practic at home. Among his patients you could find various people, such as : King Farouk of Egypt, people who flew from Cyprus, people who fought in the 3 undergrounds prior to Israel's establishment, whom he treated day and night voluntarily. Hanita, his only daughter, had 3 children, his only grand children.

The couple, Isaac and Liuba, had a very extended social life, they had friends from the arts, the theatre, the medical sphere and so forth. They hosted many celebrations and parties in their home and were very known in "little Tel Aviv".

Isaac had 5 brothers: Wolf, who lived in Russia, emigrated to Israel in 1972 and died in Israel, Benno who lived and died in Tel Aviv, David and Dr. ____ both of whom perished in the Holocaust and Lazar, who lived in Manchester, GB and died there.

Dr. Raschkes suffered from cancer, but died of a heart attack in his home in 1971.
