About Dr. John Sidney Lewis

John invented Surgical Resection of Temporal Bone, an operation to treat a previously inoperable cancer, while at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he was Associate Attending Surgeon on Head and Neck Service for many years. He also was Director of Otolaryngology, Roosevelt Hospital (Roosevelt-St. Luke's Hospital after the merger) for eighteen years. He was a graduate of the University of Alberta (MD, 1943), served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (1943-46), trained in Edinburgh, Scotland (1946-47) and did residencies in both pathology and otolaryngology (1947-50). He was elected Governor of the American College of Surgeons for six years and Past President of various medical societies.
