Dr Mohammed Hussain Ahmad

Dr Haji Awang Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Awang Ahmad, a native of Brunei, was born in Kampong Bunut. Currently he serves as the Acting Director of Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Prior to this appointment, he was the Deputy Rector of Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) and had taught at both UNISSA and University Brunei Darussalam (UBD). He received his rudimentary education at Sekolah Melayu Kiulap (1976-1980); English education from primary up to the secondary level at St. George’s School (1974-1985); upper secondary level at Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddin College (SOASC) (1986-1987); and pre-tertiary education at Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (MDPMMB) (1988-1989); religious education at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Masna Religious School (1981-1986); memorization of the noble Qur’an at Ma‘had Tahfiz Qur’an Wal Qira’at, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1990-1993); and studied Arabic at the Shukbah al-Lugah al-Arabiyyah, Islamic University of Medina, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1994-1996). He graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Hadith & Islamic Sciences from the Faculty of Hadith, Islamic University of Medina, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1996-2000); Master Degree in Hadith from the University of Jordan, Amman (2000-2002) with the title of his thesis: al-Ahadith al-Waridah fi al-Sihhat al-Nafsiyyah: Jam‘an wa-Tasnifan wa-Dirasah [Studies on the collection of Prophetic traditions associated with mental health]; and a PhD in Arabic & Islamic Studies from the University of Sydney, Australia (2005-2009) with his thesis entitled: Shaykh ‘Abd as-Samad al-Falimbani in the Nexus of 12th/18th-Century Muslim Scholars in the Arab and Malay Worlds.

Dr Mohammed Hussain joined the Government of His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam as a Tutor, at Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Institute of Islamic Studies (IPISHOAS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) (Jan 2003); He was appointed as a Lecturer at the Department of Usuluddin, IPISHOAS, UBD (February 2003); then transferred to Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) as a lecturer at the Faculty of Usuluddin (Apr 2008); He was later promoted as Senior Lecturer at the same institution (July 2011); subsequently seconded as a full-time Senior Lecturer to the Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies (SOASCIS), UBD (May 2014); and later promoted to the post of Deputy Rector UNISSA (June 2014).

In the area of administration, before being appointed as Deputy Rector, he was entrusted to hold several key positions at UNISSA, including as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Usuluddin (2009-2010), Dean of the Faculty of Usuluddin (2010-2012), and Acting Assistant Rector (2012-2013). In addition, he has been involved as member of several committees, both within and outside the university, among them Deputy Chairman of University’s Senate, Chairman of the University Admissions Committee, Chairman of Research and Consultancy, Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee, Chairman of the University Conference Leave and Grant, Deputy Chairman of the University Examination Board, Deputy Chairman of the Human Resources Management and Development Committee, Member of the Mushaf Brunei Darussalam Revision Committee, Panel Member of the Scientific Research Development Program for the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Islamic Exhibition Gallery, Member of The Islamic Crescent Observation Project (ICOP), Member of Moonsighting Committee Worldwide (MCW), a member of the Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN), Senior member of the International Economics Development Research Centre (IEDRC), and an Associate Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Understanding of Ahli Sunnah Waljama‘ah, Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College of (KUPUSB).

In the field of academia, prior to his appointment as the Deputy Rector, he devotes his services through teaching assignments, conducting lectures and tutorials for the courses offered at the Faculty of Usuluddin, supervision of postgraduate candidates (MA & PhD) and actively presented papers in seminars and conferences, at the local, national, regional, and international level, both locally and overseas. He has been invited occasionally as a guest speaker for seminars, symposia and conferences both within and outside the country. In addition, he has frequently been appointed as a panel of judges for competitions at the university as well as national level, such as the National Al-Qur’an Reading Competition for Adults, the National Al-Qur’an Memorizing Competition, and Public Speaking Competition.

In contributing and sharing knowledge to the community, Dr Mohammed Hussain is frequently invited to deliver lectures and talks, as well as involved as moderator and chairman of seminars, workshop facilitator, and as panelist for forums at the ministries, departments, agencies both public and private sectors, educational institutions, as well as mosques. In addition he is regularly invited by RTB as speaker, commentator and translator in religious programs both on radio and TV.
