Description
The portrait was painted by Miss Sarah Miriam Peale, an itinerant painter, as was the custom of the day. Rawleigh Colston was studying medicine in Paris where he met a considerably older woman than himself. He fell in love and they were married in Paris. His new wife was the widow of a general in Napoleon's army.

Born in Paris, France, Colston was the adopted son of Maria Theresa, 2nd Duchess of Valmy (c. 1775-1845) and Dr. Raleigh Edward Colston (1796–1881). His mother had divorced[1] her husband François Étienne de Kellermann, a famous cavalry general under Napoleon Bonaparte. Dr. Colston's marriage to a Catholic and a divorcee scandalized the Colston family of Virginia.
