Dr. Waring, son of Samuel and Maria A. Waring (Copp), was born in New York City on August 18, 1826. During his college courses his mother, then a widow, lived in New Haven. His only brother was graduated here (Yale College) in 1849.
He began the study of medicine in New York, and received the degree of M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1851.
He also studied in Paris, and on his return from Europe was lost in the wreck of the steamer Arctic, on September 27, 1854, in his 29th year. He was unmarried.
NOTE: On September 27, 1854, while on passage to New York from Liverpool, Arctic collided in fog with the French steamer SS Vesta off the coast of Newfoundland, and sank four hours later. Arctic's lifeboat capacity was around 180, enough for fewer than half those on board; the boats were launched in an atmosphere of panic and disorder, and in the principle of women and children first was ignored. From around 400 on board (250 passengers, 150 crew), 24 male passengers and 61 crew survived; all the women and children went down with the ship (as did Dr. Waring).
