About Dr Sophronia Tuttle Rosebrook

Sophronia was the daughter of Franklin Benjamin Rosebrook and Viesta A. Kenison.

Sophronia became a doctor, was a pioneer in Osteopathy, and had her office in Portland, ME from 1903-1937 at 633 Congress, Street.

(Please see: annette-writes.com for a wonderful book Annette Dorey just finished honoring many female physicians from 1850's to 1920 including an article about our Sophronia. It is called "Miss Dr. Lucy" and Maine's Pioneering Female Physicians, 1850's-1920.)

In 1908 she was President of the Maine Osteopathic Association.

Sophronia never married but upon her death she provided for her family, her nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews for their pursuit of "higher" education if they chose to go on to college. She kept her trust alive accounting for the years her nieces and nephews would have been of school age dissolving it when the last child reached 25 years of age.

She was an incredibly intelligent, wise, caring, loving and giving lady who taught school in Twin Mountain, New Hampshire and immediately thereafter became a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. She had an active practice in Portland, Maine up until she died of liver cancer.

Per her will and probate she owned property on Cliff Island, Maine, Portland, Maine and in Twin Mountain, New Hampshire.

Per our family "lore" she owned a home in in New Hampshire that had many bedrooms and a large screened in porch. She would bring her TB patients there for the spring and summer so they could have fresh, clean air. The home sold to a family member who lived there for many years. It sold and became a bed and breakfast.

Her niece Florence Cornell Thurston became a Doctor of Osteopathy and studied with Sophronia and also had an active practice in Portland, Maine. Florence was with Sophronia in Mass. when she passed.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Feb 20 2021, 15:42:56 UTC
