THOMAS EDWARDS W16973 Service: Green Mountain Boys, Vermont

Application for pension made by verteran on 23 Aug 1832 at which time he was a resident of Keen, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire. He gave his age as "75 years last February." He declared that in the early part of January 1776, he enlisted as a waiter, under LtCol John Barritt of Springfield, VT, who acted as captain in Col. Seth Warner's regiment. He went to Rutland, VT, then by way of Crown Point of St. John's and Montreal to the Plains of Abraham near Quebec and joined the army under Gen. Arnold. A part of his regiment was then put on the Isle of Orleans and he remained there until his unit retreated, and he was discharged when they got to Crown Point the last of June or first of July, having served five months. In the same year, 1776, he was enrolled in Jerahmel Power's company, Col Dyke or Van Dyke, and was detached into a working party under Col Barrett to build bridges and repair the Old Crown Point road from Connecticut River to Hubbardton, VT. His party did no military duty but collected cattle, provisions, etc. He served three months from August 1, 1776. He was born in Middletown, Conn., in February 1757; lived in Springfield VT during the Revolution; and has lived in Keen, NH, ever since the Revolution except for two short residences in Providence, RI. On 23 Jul 1832, Asabel Powers of Springfield, VT, age 93, declared that he served with Edwards in HJanuary 1776, both being waiters to LtCol John Barrett and remained together until May 6 when the army retreated. On 23 Jdul 1832, Thomas Barrett of Springfield, VT, age 73, declared that Edwards served under his father, LtCol John Barrett, in 1776. He stated that Edwards "lived in my father's family before and after the service." On 8 Aug 1838, Matilda Edwards of Keen, NH, age 73, declared that she was the widow of Thomas Edwards, Revolutionary pensioner, to whom she was married 12 Sep 1787; that he died 12 Apr 1837; and that her maiden name was Matilda Chandler. On 25 Sep 1838, Susanna Chandler of Peacham VT, age 67, declared that she was present at the marriage of her sister, Matilda Chandler to Thomas Edwards, at "our father's house in Pomfret" CT in the fall of 1787. She stated she believed she (Susanna) was 16 years of age at the time. Susanna was married in Oct. 1794. On Sep 1838, Mary Kimball of Keene, NH, declared that she was the daughter of Thomas and Matilda Edwards; that the record of her parents' marriage was in the handwriting of her father and has existed in a Prayerbook as laong as she could remember. (A leaf from an old Prayer book is in the file. On the back of the last page is the following record): Thomas Edwards Jr. was married to Matilda Chandler of Pomfret Sept. 22, 1787 Thomas Edwards was born June 13, 1788. Polly Edwards was born April 13, 1789. Sally Edwards was born March 5, 1791 Thos. Edwards was born December 16, 179__ (illegible) Certificate No. 1337 was issued 4 Aug 1843 under the Act of 3 Mar 1843 at $26.66 per annum.
