About Dr. rer. pol. Rudolf Benario
Rudolf Benario along with two others - Ernst Goldmann and Arthur Kahn - were the first Jews murdered by the Nazi regime in a concentration camp. Benario was arrested by the SA on March 10, just weeks after the Nazi ascension to power on January 30, 1933. On April 11, 1933, he was transferred to Dachau. The next day, Benario, Ernst Goldmann, Arthur Kahn and Erwin Kahn were "beaten with a horsewhip until they collapsed and bled from the mouth, nose and other body parts." Later they were walked to the woods outside Dachau and shot by SS men. Benario, Goldmann and Arthur Kahn died instantly, Erwin Kahn a few days later.
Rudolf Benario was awarded a doctorate in Economics in 1932. His thesis was published in 1933, the same year he was murdered. Benario was the son of Leo Benario, the former editor of Frankfurter Zeitung. Benario's grandfather was Ignaz Bing, the founder of what was at one time one of the largest toy companies in the world, and a Kommerzienrat and Geheimrat (honorary titles conferred on distinguished men of commerce).
Benario and the other three shot had been members of the Communist Youth League and Benario was a leader of the Young Socialists.
Zusammen mit Ernst Goldmann und Arthur Kahn gilt er als erster in einem nationalsozialistischen KZ ermordeter Jude.
