Dudley Jolly Barnard, the sixth child of Samuel and Nancy, was born in Tennessee on the 9th of December 1832 (from 1839 store book ¹). He came to Missouri with his parents when he was 11 years of age, and lived with them until his death. His middle name, Jolly, was the maiden name of this mother, who was of the numerous Jollys of eastern Tennessee.

Although he lived to a ripe old age of 71, he never married. Dudley was a strong man, physically, but his mind was not normal. His head shook “like the palsy”, but he was a good worker, an exceedingly bright in mathematics, although he had no education. He could figure anything correctly and quickly. He was good natured, pleasant, and always singing a song.

The family home was deeded to him, in order that he would always have a home, and never come to want. The deed reads as follows: “From Abstract of Title – October 15, 1856, a Warranty Deed to the E½ of NE¼, Sec. 33, TW 29-R 19 piece of land was given by Samuel H. Caldwell to Dudley J. Barnard.”

When Dudley died his estate had to be probated, and on October 12, 1904, A.D. Barnard was appointed administrator by the Probate Court of Webster Co., MO and testifies: “A.D. Barnard says that to the best of his knowledge and belief the names of the heirs of said J.D. Barnard are respectively as follows: 1. Dianah Ewing, sister; 2. Unknown heirs of Sarah Yandle, sister, who resides in Texas; 3. Unknown heirs of Zeddie K. Barnard, brother, who resides in the state of Texas; 4. J.C. Barnard, brother; 5. A.D. Barnard, brother; 6. Jane Barnard, sister; 7. Mary Palmer, sister; 8. Martha Wilson, sister; 9. H.P. Barnard, brother.”

The estate was settled by A.D. Barnard, and he gave an administrators deed to Fountain Frazier, dated February 14, 1907. On June 27, 1912, Fountain Frazier gave a special Warrantee Deed to A.D. Barnard and Letha Barnard.

Dudley Jolly Barnard died on the 8th of April 1904 and is buried near his parents in the Panther Valley Cemetery. He was found dead at the wood pile one night, having fallen and struck his head.

¹ When speaking of the “store book” Noble Nay is referring to the books of “Barnard and Bottom” a country general store operated by Samuel Barnard and Charles I. Bottom. Noble Nay states, “the author has in his possession two books of the daily sales records of that firm…Many interesting and unusual items appear in these records, and from which we have received untold data that could not have been secured from any other source.”
