Ty Burrell Just Learned the Shocking Story of His Black Slave Ancestors Talk about a "Modern Family"! "Finding Your Roots" host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. dropped that quip on Ty Burrell during last night's Season 3 premiere, "The Stories We Tell." Actor Ty Burrell, political organizer Donna Brazile, and artist Kara Walker all discovered details from their pasts, with the tie of slavery binding their surprising stories.

Kara Walker, whose artwork depicts the horrific legacy of slavery, discovered one of her great-great grandparents was a white man, and Ty Burrell learned that he has black ancestors.

Ty's great-great grandmother, Susannah Weeks (that's her in the pic above), was "a free person of color" who applied, on her own, for The Homestead Act. She traveled from Tennessee to Oregon to start a new life, and pulled it off. Ty was suitably impressed with this "badass" woman who brought his family to Oregon, where the actor was later born.

Through Census records and other documents, Ty also learned the name of Susannah's mother -- Ty's great-great-great grandmother -- Nellie Mask. Ty further learned that Nellie's mother was a slave named Jane who was impregnated at age 13 by her white 33-year-old slave "master," Dudley Mask..........

JOHN MASK'S SON DUDLEY BY HIS WIFE DRUSCILLA (RAIFORD) HAD CHILDREN WITH HIS HALF SISTER PENELOPE.THEIR CHILDREN WERE JOHN D IN 1820, DUDLEY IN 1821, SUSANNAH IN 1823 (MY GGGGG), DRURY IN 1824 AND MARY AMANDA IN 1828.

WHEN JOHN MASK DIED IN 1830 HE FREED PENELOPE AND HER CHILDREN.PENELOPE AND HER CHILDREN LEFT NORTH CAROLINA SHORTLY AFTER AND TRAVELED WEST. THEY STAYED AT SEVERAL STATES FOR A TIME AND FINALLY SETTLING IN OREGON.

PENEOPLE'S CHILDREN CHANGED THEIR NAME FROM MASK TO MATTHIS THEN TO MASK.

SUSANNAH MY GRANDMOTHER SEVERAL TIMES REMOVED, HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH LOUIS JOHNSON WHEN THE FAMILY WAS FREED IN NORTH CAROLINA.SHE HAD SEVERAL CHILDREN WITH HIM. WHEN HER FAMILY MOVED HER MOVED TOO, BUT HE DID NOT GO ALL THE WAY TO OREGON WITH HER.SUSANNAH CHANGED HER NAME TO JOHNSON WHEN SHE FINALLY ARRIVED IN OREGON.

SUSANNAH'S CHILDREN MARANADA AND FRACES LEGERE ARE BOTH MY GRANDPARENTS.

According to an unnamed researcher who posted the following information on Ancestry.com on Dudley Mask:

Born in North Carolina, USA on 1779 to John Mask and Drusilla Raiford. Dudley married Penelope Ellender Mask and had a child. Dudley married Nancy Barr and had 3 children. Dudley married Milly Hough. He passed away on 1813 in Richmond, North Carolina, USA.
