On December 16, 1941, nine days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Eben and his brother Joe, enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater during the war and was also an instructor at the school for signalman at Farragut, ID. Eben was honorably discharged from the Navy on November 4, 1945. Eben returned from the Navy to the Clear Lake area. He then met the pen-pal girl he had fallen in love with during the war, Ardis Goldie Benson. The two were married on February 23, 1947. To this union 8 children were born. They raised their family on a farm by Altamont, SD until they moved to Clear Lake, SD in 1966. Eben was employed at the Farmers Union (Cenex) for many years. He took pride hustling to accommodate customers. He never walked, he always ran, and he was either humming or whistling while he worked.
