About Ed Carpenter

Growing up with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in his backyard with Laura and step-father Tony George as parents, Carpenter was no stranger to racing. However, he was made aware early on by his parents that his opportunity to race was leveraged upon his performance in the classroom.

Carpenter began racing at eight years old and balanced racing with education throughout much of his career. Earning a Bachelors of Science degree in marketing from Butler University in 2003, Carpenter graduated from Butler just weeks before he won the Freedom 100 Indy Pro Series race at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

With a college degree under his belt, Carpenter is now able to focus on several other activities when he's not racing. Away from the track, Carpenter follows professional football and is an Indianapolis Colts season ticket holder and an enthusiastic Butler Bulldogs supporter. He is also an avid cyclist, water skier and enjoys working out.

Before he became a regular in the IndyCar Series, Ed Carpenter was a short track racer in the United States Auto Club (USAC) midget, sprint and Silver Crown Series.

He made his midget debut in 1998 at the now defunct 16th Street Speedway, just down the road from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The next year, he scored his first feature victory in only his fourth career start at Louisville Motor Speedway. He finished 13th in the USAC National Midget Car Series as a rookie.

In 2001, he moved up to the USAC Sprint Car Series. Among the tracks Carpenter raced at was the three-quarter-mile Richmond International Raceway. Carpenter was a USAC competitor at Richmond in 2002 and 2003. That was also the year he competed in Firestone Indy Lights (Indy Pro Series).

Carpenter resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Heather, his daughter Makenna, son Ryder, and their two dogs Bentley (Rottweiler) and Roscoe (Chihuahua).
