ED STAATS PULLS IN 34-POUND CATFISH ON TROTLINE Wapello, Ia., Sept. 21.-- Ed Staats caught the largest fish of the season the past week when he landed a catfish weighing 34 1/2 pounds. The fish was caught on a trot line a short distance north of the bridge in the Iowa river at Wapello.
OBITUARY - Wapello Republican, Wapello, Iowa, Thursday, June 19, 1958:
EDWARD STAATS DIES SUNDAY Edward Lee Staats, 80, life resident of Wapello, died at 5:40 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at Muscatine General hospital. He had been ill for about four weeks. Staats was born at Wapello Aug. 8, 1872 the son of Casper (error: should read Jasper) and Maria Staats. He was married to Mabel Valley Benson. She died in 1952. Surviving are 3 sons, Carl, Elmer, and Jack, all of Wapello; a daughter, Lela Willits, Muscatine; 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Two sisters and a brother died previously. Services were held at the Dudgeon Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Caleb Larson. Phyllis McCulley played the organ, and the flowers were cared for by granddaughters. Grandsons served as pall bearers. Burial was in the Harrison Cemetery.
