Ed was drafted in 1943, went to the Army Special Service, responsible for show business and production, newspapers, and physical education. He served in the Aleutian Islands, was a friend of Dashiell Hammett, discharged in '45. Ed wrote the "All Soldier Show", toured the Aleutians. He did sets, scripts, and a production number.

Ed's mother was born in Vienna, played chess. She was invalided early by some dread disease. Ed's father was born in Germany, started as a draper, and was an upholsterer. He lived to his late 80s in NYC.

Ed's sister Fran married Lou Stein, who had a printing business. Children:

Jack Stein, Long Island ran printing business, salesman for looseleaf products.
