Edda (75), a pensioner, was bludgeoned to death with a pickaxe at her Ilanda Road, Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti home, early on the morning of Saturday 16th November 2013.
The four perpetrators allegedly targeted the Bothas’ after they couldn't gain entry to a neighbour's property.
Edda's frail husband, Braam, who is partially blind and crippled, screamed to the neighbours for help, that Edda was bleeding to death. Murray McGoldrick said he rushed next door where he could see Edda through the living room curtains. “A CCPO Security guard from Chubb arrived, and we entered through the open kitchen door,” he said. “I ran down the passage and could see Edda’s legs protruding through the bedroom doorway. It was the most terrible sight. I have never seen so much blood. Edda's head had been hacked open.
The CCPO members pursued two men in dark-coloured rain jackets, but they managed to escape. Richard Allkins, chairman of the Amanzimtoti CCPO, said they were appalled at the lack of response by the emergency services operator.
By the time help arrived, more than 40 minutes had elapsed, and Edda was certified dead at the scene. The bloodied axe was found in the garden by police after the assailants fled.
