"Settled near Austin, Texas, and was elected sheriff of his county. In his official capacity he had many desperate characters to con- tend with, and in November, 1887, was killed by a noted desperado. An article published in one of the local papers described him as " a man of inflexible determination, a dead-shot, and dauntless foe. In private life gentle and tender-hearted. Though five men have fallen by his hand, he never took a life in a private quarrel, and only when forced to do so in self-defense while in performance of his duty as an officer of the law."
