Steward Call 1894-1979 Edgar Joseph Steward, born Ashtabula County, Ohio, Apr 9, 1854, son of Justus and Amanda Main Steward, passed away in Cowley County, Kansas, Jun 9, 1932, aged 78 years 2 months. He was buried next to his first wife in Cloverdale Cemetery, Chautauqua County, Kansas. He married the first time on Oct 16, 1881, in Marion County, Iowa to: Mary Elizabeth Woody, born Marion County, Iowa, Jun 6, 1862, daughter of William Hampton and Jemina Day Woody, passe away in Cowley County, Kansas, Mar 15, 1896, aged 33 years, 9 months and 9 days. They had eight children, two died in infancy. Mary is buried in Cloverdale Cemetery, Chautauqua County, Kansas. Edith Carruthers, second wife of Edgar J. Steward was born in Indiana, Feb 21, 1869, and moved with her parents to Cowley County, Kansas in 1872, and settled on Otter Creek. Never having any children of her own, she was a sincere and loving mother for the five step children. All called her mother and strangers never knew but what she was their real mother. She passed away Feb 5, 1941, aged 71 years, 11 months, 14 days. She is buried in Cedar Vale Cemetery, next to her father, Leon Carruthers. Edgar J. Steward moved from Ohio with his parents to Tama County, Iowa, in 1861, at the age of 7. He lived there until 1887, when he, his wife Mary and their three children, Arden, Etta, Ida ( Ida died in Nov 1887), moved to Cowley County, Kansas, where the other four children were born. Rush in 1888, Clearence in 1890, and Alma in 1894. Also another child that lived only a short time. After Mary's death in 1896, Edgar lived in Cowley County for four more years. In 1900, he sold his farm and moved to a farm 10 miles north of Chandler, Kansas. He married Edith Emma Carruthers on Mar 15, 1902. In 1905, he sold the farm and they moved to Portales, New Mexico. New Mexico was not a farming county, so the moved to Arkansas, between Springfield and Fayetteville. He retired and moved back to Cowley County to be near his sons who had married and settled there. He died in 1932
