He was born in Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls), New York, moving to Franklin twp, Portage county, OH before 16 December 1838, marrying Lucretia Ranney there on that date. The family removed to Brown county, IL in the mid-1850s. The couple had ten children, the youngest only a year old when Edgar died.

Lucretia Ranney's mother was Olive (Jaques) Ranney Baldwin, a sister of Hiram Jaques, whose graveyard is Edgar's final resting place.
