  • (I) Daniel Markham, immigrant ancestor
  • of the line herein traced, was born in Plumstead Manor, near Norwich, England, of which city his brother Matthew was mayor in 1634. The brother Matthew had a son, also named Daniel, who was a colonel in the British Army and came to New York with the Duke of York in 1664; the last named Daniel was the ancestor of Admiral Markham, of the British Navy, whose mother, brothers, and sisters, were living in Independence, Iowa, in 1903. Daniel (2) Markham, the immigrant ancestor, arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1665, and in 1665 removed to Middletown, Connecticut, where he became a freeman in 1674, and where he was prominent in the affairs of church and State. He married (first), November 3, 1669, Elizabeth Whitmore, daughter of Lieutenant Francis Whitmore, of Cambridge. She died about 1676, and he married '(second) Patience Harris', daughter of William Harris, of Middletown. Children of the first marriage were : Daniel, Elizabeth, and James, of further mention. 'To the second marriage, also, three children were born: Martha, who died in infancy; Martha, and EDITH.
