Edith James Spain, 61, who had worked as an editor in Washington and lived overseas with her Foreign Service officer husband, died of cancer June 5 at Georgetown University Hospital.
Mrs. Spain was born in Conrad, Mont., but moved to Washington at a young age. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Beloit College. She served in the Navy WAVES during World War II, earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago, and taught school in Los Angeles before her marriage in 1951.
Mrs. Spain accompanied her husband, James, on diplomatic assignments to Pakistan, Turkey and Tanzania that included ambassadorial assignments in Dar-es-Salaam and Ankara.
She edited two books he wrote on the Pathans of Pakistan and Afghanistan and during the 1950s and 1960s was an editor for various government agencies and American University.
Mrs. Spain was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and was a supporter of the House of Ruth and Martha's Table.
In addition to her husband, of Washington, survivors include three sons, Patrick, of Chicago, Stephen, of Boston, and William, of Amherst, Mass., and her mother Edith Burke James, and a sister Catherine Barnes, both of Upland, Calif.
