About Edith Flynn
Edith and husband Frank emigrated to Australia with their two children John and Stanley on the Roscommon, leaving 2nd August,1912, arriving Brisbane 27th September 1912. Both children died within several days of their arrival, having been sick on the boat with gastro-enteritis. They were buried in Brisbane. Edith and Frank returned to England the following year with the children's remains, and buried them again in Rochdale.
Still in England in 1915, Frank enlisted with Lancashire Fusiliers and was wounded 2 years later in France. Joyce and Harry were born during the war years, and they all bravely re-emigrated to Australia in 1927. They embarked on the Athenic 23rd April 1927, and arrived 27th June 1927.
Grandma (Edith) lived with us (Flynn family at Newport NSW) some time after Frank's death when her health was failing, and she brought a nice extended feel to our family. Dad (Harry) called her "mother", and we loved to hear her broad Lancashire accent. She was a quiet, loving and stoic person, having lived through and survived the many many difficult trials in her life. We were lucky to have her for so long.
