About Edith Blanche Potter, RN
POTTER, Edith B. - 65, Kentville (formerly of Halifax), passed away Monday, July 24, 2006, at her daughter's home in Kingston, her family at her side. Born in Hamilton, Ont., Edith was a daughter of the late George and Miriam Evenden. She grew up in Hamilton and completed her nursing degree at the University of Western Ontario and Hamilton General Hospital in 1962. Following graduation, Edith worked for the VON in Digby, where she met her husband Joseph Potter. She worked as a public health nurse in Halifax and later practiced hospital based nursing in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. After spending several years as a full-time homemaker, Edith returned to work in business with her husband, working in property management as well as running several business centers in the Halifax area. Her retirement to Kentville in May of 2005 coincided with the diagnosis of her illness. Edith often expressed her gratitude for the visits, calls and cards that she received over the 14 months that she
lived with lung cancer. The support that she received was a reflection of the generosity, warmth, kindness and hospitality that she extended to her family and many friends throughout her life. Over the last year, Edith enjoyed a full life in spite of her illness due to her strong faith and positive attitude, as well as to the excellent care that she received. Special thanks to her palliative care physician, Dr. Catherine McNally, for her expertise and compassionate care, and to the wonderful nurses of the Kings Branch of the VON. We are also grateful to Gloria Troke and Cathy Schofield who led our dedicated team of caregivers, providing companionship, care and support to Edith and our family over the past few months. Edith was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Potter. She will be sadly missed by her sister, Doreen Evenden, Digby; brothers, Bruce (Penny) Evenden, Dundas, Ont.; George (Maureen) Evenden, Wasaga Beach, Ont.; many nieces and nephews and her extended Potter
family. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Janet (Ron) Richter, Kingston; Jennifer Potter (Craig Webster), Toronto, and Sarah (John) Threlfall, Dunedin, New Zealand. Edith will be remembered by her cherished grandchildren, Anna, Natalie, Emma and Katie Richter, Liam and Jeremy Webster, and Owen, Megan and Maya Threlfall. The family will receive visitors between 6-9 p.m. Thursday, July 27, in White Family Funeral Home, 100 Cornwallis St., Kentville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28, in United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, 440 Main St., Kentville, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will take place later Friday afternoon in St. Peter's and St. Thomas' Anglican Church Cemetery, Weymouth. Donations made in memory of Edith will be gratefully accepted by the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses (Palliative Care Program), 46 Chipman Dr., Kentville, NS B4N 3V7. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to
White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
