Ancestors of Albert Edward DIVER 28 Oct 2013
First Generation
Albert Edward
DIVER, 1954,
age 53
Spouse: Gladys
Ruby STRIPLING,
1974, age 73

1. Albert Edward DIVER, son of Charles DIVER (1866-1954) and Mary Ann BROWN (1868-
1948), was born on 27 January 1901 in Shoreditch, London. 1,2 He was an Airforce in WWII.
Salesman for Rowntrees. He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 in St Leonard's, Shoreditch,
London.1 He appeared in the census on 2 April 1911 in Dalston, London. 2 On 2 April 1911 he
was a school in Dalston.2 He married Gladys Ruby STRIPLING on 14 August 1926 in Shoreditch.

He died on 24 March 1969. He was buried in St Mary's, Old Ewell.
Visible in 1901 census in Shoreditch. I have copy of birth and death certificates. Won a choral
scholarship to York Minster as a teenager but his mother decided he had to leave school to help
support the family instead (WW1). Met Gladys at evening classes (and decided straight away that
he would marry her). Was a gym instructor, great physique. They performed musical
entertainments together during WW1.

First job just to earn money was for Carron & Co by
Thames; had to drown rats caught in cages overnight. Decided to train as salesman after
consultation; first sales job in London for Gestetner selling fabric measuring device; heavy, no car.
Nana helped him show companies how much extra fabric they were giving away; did well. Next
job: sales for sweet company in Glasgow; did well but company went bust in depression; third sales
job with Rowntree's as East Anglia rep; got car!

When living in Kent, walked with Gladys along the
cliffs from Westgate to Burchington and puzzled over the pairs of sandbags tied up by each lamp
post. Decided they ought to untie the tops to make it easier to pour the sand on a fire; and so
walked back (5 miles) untying every bag. Home Guard CO told the unit 'Some silly bugger has
untied the tops of all our sandbags; didn't they know you throw the whole bag on top?' So: walked
back and tied the tops all up again.

Coastal Command: (Grandpa was in Norfolk; then stationed at
Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis for part of WWII). Mother remembered the Halifaxes, and says
Grandpa's squadron flew Lancasters when he was at Lincoln. Salesman for Rowntree's.
He was in 502 Squadron: "In January 1942 the squadron officially moved to both Norfolk (RAF
Docking) and Cornwall, where a maintenance station was set up at RAF St Eval. Until 1944 the
squadron's main role was to carry anti-submarine patrols. In January 1943 conversion to Halifax
GR.Mk.IIs began, the first patrol by this type being flown on 12 March. In addition to antisubmarine patrols, now also attacks on enemy shipping off the French coast were made.

In September 1944 with the French coast back in Allied hands, the squadron moved to Scotland at
RAF Stornoway to carry out attacks on German shipping off the Norwegian coast, remaining there
until the end of the war. It was disbanded on 25 May 1945."

"I remember Daddy saying a prayer at the family get together in 1946 when all were discharged
and home again (60 of us) at Uncle Bill’s house, at how we had all been through the war and here
we were, thanks be to God altogether to celebrate the end of the horrific war. We all sang ‘Now
thank we all our God’ and then we all cried and hugged each other. A day I treasure.".
'Burt'.

"John Diver born about 1590 left a will from which it is possible to work out three generations of the Diver family in
Isleham with help from parish records.

Although the parish records are of limited help at this time, it is possible that
this was the only Diver family in Isleham between 1590 and 1680. Although I can find no definitive evidence it also
seems possible (even likely if this is the only Diver family in Isleham at the time) that this John Diver is the great
grandson of John Diver born about 1590 and married to Margaret Unknown and that the line is through John Diver
born 1618 and his son John Diver by his first wife Ann Unknown. The first three generations of this line is evident
through the will. It is the link between this John Diver third generation that is unproven.": notes taken from larger tree
