

Edmund Potter, FRS, MP was born in 1802 at Manchester, Lancashire, England, the son of James Potter and Mary Moore. He married Jessie Crompton, daughter of Abraham Crompton and Alice Hayhurst in 1829. A pioneer in the modern calico printing industry, he founded the Dinting Vale Printworks with his uncle, and later founded Edmund Potter & Co., which had 500 employees. Edmund served as President of the Manchester School of Art, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and as Liberal MP for Carlisle. Edmund died at Camfield Place, Hertfordshire in October 1883, leaving an estate valued over £441,000.
