Edmund Wood was one of many who joined the Puritan movement with Richard Denton to New England. They sailed on the ship "James" - He and his five children - He was widowed at the time. They ended up settling in Hempstead, NY. He met Capt. John Underhill in 1643.


Edmund was a member of the Puritian Movement in England and decided it was in the Wood families best interest to imagrated to the new world because he saw no religous future in England.

Edmund was a son of Edmund Wood of Shelff, Halifax, Yorkshire, England. He was born in Halifax by 1586.[1]

He was married 21 May 1611 at Halifax to Martha Lome (Lum), daughter of William Lum. [1]

Edmund Wood and his family emigrated to New England in 1634/35,[2]probably aboard the James of Bristol. He settled initially at Watertown, Massachusetts.[1][2]

In 1636 he owned lands in Springfield and Wethersfield, Mass, then to Stamford Conn in 1641. By 1644 the Wood family was located in Hempstead, Long Island. In 1650 Edmund and his sons bought largely in Smithtown from the Indians. In 1655 he removed to Huntington, Long Island.[3]

He was among the original proprietors of Hempstead, Long Island, moving there in 1644. Others were Jeremiah Wood, Richard Gildersleeve, Thurston Rainer, Robert Coe, Jonas Wood "Halifax," John Seamon, Edmond Wood, Jonas Wood "Owram" and Samuel Clark.

He died at Huntington, Long Island, NY before 7 June 1663, the date of a deed executed by his son Jonas for "land that was formerly my father Edmond Woode's."[1]

Martha baptized at Halifax 8 April 1612; married Thurston Raynor (Rainer) at Wethersfield about 1638.[2] Jonas baptized at Halifax 18 September 1614, resided Southampton and Huntington, NY, believed to have married Elizabeth Strickland. daug of John Strickland. He was known as Jonas Wood "Owram" to distinguish him from Jonas Wood "Halifax", another immigrant from the same part of England, of no known relationship.[2] Susannah, baptized at Halifax 23 March 1616, possibly married Samuel Clarke of Southampton, NY Jeremiah, baptized at Halifax 6 January 1619/20, resided Hempstead, NY, married Elizabeth, believed daughter of the first Richard Gildersleeve. Jeremiah died 28 Dec 1686 at Huntington Timothy, baptized at Halifax 12 July 1622, resided Jamaica, NY died in 1659, John Strickland administered Timothy's estate for the benefit of Timothy's children.
