Edna Boyer

Edna K. Boyer Lockwood, 97, Goshen, died at 9 p.m. Monday at her home. She was born Nov. 15, 1910, in LaGrange County, to Edward and Mary (Weaver) Kauffman. She married Clifford G. Boyer March 7, 1929. He died Aug. 6, 1976. On Dec. 15, 1979, she married Orville Lockwood. He died in 1985. She was a U.S. postal carrier at the Goshen Post Office for 20 years.

She was a member of People’s Bible Church, Benton, and Busy Bee Homemakers Club for more than 50 years. She became a licnesed pilot in 1947 and completed her last long-distance solo flight in 2005 to Florida. She was known to many people as the “Flying Grandma.” She volunteered for World Missionary Press and was an organist for her church.

She is survived by three daughters, Doris (Dan T.) Yoder, Goshen, Peggy (Freeman) Willits, South Milford, and Rosemond Hartzler, Goshen; a son, James H. (Janice) Boyer, Goshen; a stepdaughter, Mary Kay (Leonard) Ropp, Goshen; two stepsons, Douglas (Janice) Lockwood, Churubusco, and Paul (Brenda) Lockwood, Syracuse; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; thirteen stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Irene Kauffman, Middlebury, and Velma (Richard) Nusbaum, Kendallville.

She was preceded in death by twin daughters, Arlene and Irene; a son, Clifford Boyer Jr.; two stepsons, Phillip and Robert Lockwood; a stepgrandchild; two sisters, Sylvia Kropf and Orpha Eash; and two brothers, Harley and David Kauffman.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Yoder-Culp-Funeral Home. Services are set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Randolph of People’s Bible Church and Rev. Harold Mast, Edna’s nephew, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Middlebury.

Pallbearers are Douglas Yoder, Joe Sparklin, Clifford Boyer, Cameron Boyer, Tobie Mast and Pete Lima. Honorary pallbearers are Austin Kramer and Brandon Kramer.
