Seielstad, pioneer wholesale grocer of La Crosse who passed away at his borne, 1933 Main street. Wed neaday evening, will be held Sat urday afternoon at 2 oclock at the residence. Interment will be made lu Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Seielstad ia survived by four daughters, Mrs. O. if. Troen In Norway, and Edna, Lillie and Alma, all of La Crosse; two sons, Albert r-vwfe i i y - V E. SEIELSTAD of La Crosse, and Harold of Fargo; and four sisters, Mrs. E. A. Horn-stad, Mrs. Mary Johnson and Anna Selelstad, all of Black River Falls, and Mra. L. M. Peterson, Minneapolis. Miss Edna Selelstad Is an instruc tor in the Logan high school, while Lillie Selelstad teaches at Central high school. Mr. Selelstad was born In Gu brandsdalen, Norway, on August 10, 1852. He came to La Crosse In 1870 where he took a position as bookkeeper, - maintaining that s post for five years. He opened a store In Madison in 1881, operating it for four years. In 1887 he and several ether persons bought out the C. B Solberg wholesale grocery house in La Crosse, and six years later Mr. Selelstad became the sole proprietor of the business. In 1894 ML Selelstad took J. S. Hougen as a partner In the business. About 1905 Frank Sisson Joined the firm, which became the Sisson-Seielstad - nougen company. A few years ago both Mr. Selelstad and Mr. Hougen left the company, which took the name of Sisson company on January 1 of this yeai. - Mr. Seielstad was married to Anna -Dahl In 1882. Mrs. Seielstad passed away In 1894.

Known as E. E. Seielstad in La Crosse Wisconsin. He emigrated with uncle/stepfather Anders and mother Marit along with 3 siblings and one half-sister. His mother was first married to his father Engebret and remarried after his death to his brother Anders. Came on ship "Hero" 1870. Pioneer wholesale grocer in La Crosse, Wisconsin Seielstad was apparently not in business with Hougen too long before 1894; Seielstad was running a grocery in La Crosse called Hansen & Seielstad with an Ole Hansen on Pearl Street in 1890, and Seielstad was listed on his own at the N. 2nd Street location in 1891 and 1893. Hougen is listed as a teller at a local bank in 1890, 1891 and 1893. Seielstad & Hougen appear together in the 1895 city directory (there is no 1894 city directory). They moved their grocery business from 2nd Street to 113 N. Front St. around 1901, according to city directory listings. None of these buildings remain today. A J.J. Hogan had a grocery business on Front Street;

Both Seielstad and Hougen were active members of the Norden Society, a Norwegian-American cultural group in La Crosse. The LPL Archives has some of their minutes from 1900-1935, pre-1929 written in Norwegian.

Passport application is is planning to travel from New York on Bergen fjord ship June 6,1924 to visit relatives in Norway. Ship list he and Alma, age 34 born September 29, 1869 on S. S. Maurelandla from Southampton to New York on Sept. 20, 1924. He is shown as a naturalized citizen May 8, 1922 La Crosse, WI.
