About Edward Broughton

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Broughton-1804

Everardus[1]/Everard[2]/Edward[3] Broughton Esq was born around 1510 (estimated based on sister marrying 1535).

He was the son of John Broughton Esq of Broughton[1][4] in Bridekirk[3].

He was the brother of Jane Broughton who married Richard Osborne. [2][1]

He was the brother of Lancelyn Broughton. [5]

He resided Westmorland, now called Cumbria. [1]

Everardus had no (surviving) children, based on his sister Jane being described as his heir[1]. To be mentioned at all in entries for the Osborne family suggests that his estate was significant. It makes sense that there are few records for him if he didn't marry or have children and died young.

Research Notes

Cousin to Broughtons of Seaton

Everardus seems to have been a cousin of Marcus Broughton of Seaton (born around 1535) based on:

Marcus and Everardus having the same blazon, except Everardus's included a crescent to indicate a second son[3].
Marcus having a son and grandson named Everardus Broughton.
Marcus having a grand uncle named Launcelott Broughton. [6]

Name Everardus

The name Everardus "was brought to England by the Normans"[7]. The first Broughton of this line was a Norman, Ailward de Broughton, who arrived in Broughton with the 1066 Conquest of England. See notes here.

Note that Everardus is not a fancy way of writing Edward, because that was written "Edwardi" in Seaton.

Lancelyn

Could Lancelyn be a feminine version of Lancelot? There are records of:

  • Lancelot Broughton, alive Cumberland around 1530. [8]
  • Lancelot/Launcelon Broughton, alive 1540. [9]
  • Lancelot Lancaster of Broughton born around 1520. [10]
  • Lancelot Broughton born Wales 1600.

However, the name Lancelyn has also been described as derived from the last name Lancelin of Cheshire[11], which would indicate a male.

Lancelyn didn't have any children, based on Jane being his heir.
