About Edward Fallon

Edward was a Drill Sergeant in the 30th Regt. Foot from 1815-1822. By 1824 he was listed as a Police Constable, on his child's baptism. He gave 14 years service, including 7 years as Sergeant of Constabulary and acting Chief Constable, He spent 12 years as Petty Sessions Clerk at Clonoulty, Tipperary. He resigned, due to ill health/fatigue.
When immigrating, he claimed to be a Farm / Agricultural Labourer. (Not sure whether this was a convenient way to be paid to emigrate, or if he had in fact become an agricultural worker. However, in his later years, he worked as a shepherd.)

Edward and his family emigrated to Australia, to join his two children (Edward and Mary) who had already emigrated in 1841. They left Cork on 03.11.1844, aboard the HERALD, arriving in Botany Bay on 09.02.1845.

The Fallon family settled in Sydney for three years, before moving to Melbourne.

In New South Wales, he appears to have worked as a Policeman (still to be verified) and then spent 6 months working as a Storekeeper, at Stewart's River.
In 1848 Edward travelled to Melbourne and applied to the Superintendent of Port Phillip, La Trobe, for a job as Policeman. He worked as Watchhouse Keeper, at Market Square, City Police, Melbourne, eventually applying to become a Chief Constable.
In later years, Edward worked as a shepherd at Jackson's Creek, Victoria.
Edward died at the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum, aged 75.

Information regarding Edward's occupation, comes from letters petitioning La Trobe for Policing roles in Victoria. These are held at the Victoria Records Office, Melbourne. Copies held by Fiona Laws.
