About Edward Grainger

George Edward Grainger, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center surrounded by the family that he loved and that loved him. He was born in Horry County on May 29, 1942, the son of the late George Emerson Grainger and the late Emma Floyd Grainger.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Edward served his country in Panama during the Vietnam War. He spent thirty years serving as a conductor with CSX Railroad Transportation, where he was responsible for coordinating the daily operation of the train and safety of everyone aboard. In his early days, he was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many hours at Ashpole Hunting Club and Grainger Mill Pond.

He loved people and cherished the many friendships he made both in his professional and personal life. He enjoyed a good conversation and always looked forward to visits from his family and friends. Edward especially looked forward to spending time with his brother-in-law, H.V. who he adored. He found it difficult to get rid of old items and had quite a collection that he enjoyed showing to others. He could tell a story about each of the items that he had saved through the years. With the ability to make almost anything grow, he always had a beautiful garden and delighted in sharing with others. ...

In addition to his parents, Edward was predeceased by three brothers, William, Kenneth, and Waldo Grainger, and a sister, Jerelene Grainger Elliott.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 16, 2023 at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins. Funeral services will follow the visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Monday in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols.

If you would like to remember Edward, the family suggests that donations be made in his memory to Mullins First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, South Carolina 29574.
