In 1917, the Adair County News was sold to Barksdale Hamlett, Edward's father, who had served as Kentucky's superintendent of public instruction from 1912 to 1916. Edward's mother, Daisy Hamlett, would become publisher after her husband's death in 1919. In 1926, Edward Hamlett, became the paper's editor. He later was the publisher of the paper.
A native of Buffalo, he retired from the Newspaper business in 1963 and moved to Louisville. He was a 1925 graduate of Centre College, a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Louisville.
