The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Edward R. Hanford, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 9 October 1864, while serving with Company H, 2d U.S. Cavalry, in action at Woodstock, Virginia, for capture of flag of 32d Battalion Virginia Cavalry (Confederate States of America).
