About Edward Lancaster
THOMAS LANCASTER b.1843. In 1861, he was living at Keresforth Hall in Barnsley and at 18 was described as a currier's apprentice. In the 1871 census, he was still living with his father's family aged 28, but now described as' auctioneer, land agent' like his brother Edward George. In 1881 Alice H Lancaster, his wife is present and she has 4 children :Rosa, Thomas E, George B, and Edith Marianne , who is an infant. In the 1891 census, aged 48 , Thomas Lancaster is head of his own family who are living at 111 Dodsworth Road, Barnsley, Yorkshire, West Riding. He is described as 'auctioneer & valuer'. He is described as married, but his wife is not with the family of three girls: Rosa aged 14, Marianne aged 10 and Alice H aged 7 years old. However, a governess is mentioned and there are two female servants. In the 1901 census, Thomas Lancaster is described as being a widower and an auctioneer & valuer, share broker and assisting at Savings bank.The family are living at Cliffe House, Barnsley Road, Monk Bretton, Yorkshire West Riding, in the Parish of Monk Bretton St Paul. George Bingley is now 21, while Edith Marianne is 20 and Hilda Alice is 17 years old. Rosa is not mentioned, but there are three female servants. In 1918, when his daughter Hilda Alice lost her life, he is described as a Land Agent. He died in 1930 leaving over 60,000 GBP to his family, who all continued to live at Cliffe House together until their deaths in the 1950's.. Thomas Edward Lancaster (1843-1930) was buried in the adjacent plot to his wife & son in the Barnsley Monk Bretton Cemetery.
