About Edward M McDonald [Convict "Active" 1791]

Edward McDonald, was a member of the Grenadier Guards, billeted at the Brown Bear Inn from 25.8.1789 and was with the Guards till his arrest 15.3.1790 - indicted for stealing, convicted to 7yrs at Middlesex, and transported on the Active - arrived from Portsmouth on 26.9.1791.

He became a policeman at Field of Mars to 1825; District Constable at Parramatta. He held the license for the Hope & Anchor, George St, Sydney, 23.6.1834 - reissued 5.11.1834, 17.6.1835, 25.6.1836. SMH death notice of wife Mary at Parramatta, says Edward a publican, Parramatta St, Sydney 16.12.1843 - the Golden Anchor Tavern.

He had 3 partners – Sarah Liddiard / Tillery / Richardson (not married) together from 1797-1804 (1805 muster shows 3 children but I have 4); Mary Burkit m. 25.1.1807 (no issue) and Elizabeth Nock m. 18.5.1843 relict of the late Samuel Nock.

Edward McDonald paid 450/- for a parcel of land adjoining Thomas Rowley, John Bunberry and George Williams, Lot 4, Parramatta Rd. During the period 1793-94: almost all of Newtown municipality is granted to Lieutenant Thomas Rowley (Kingston Farm) and to Nicholas Devine (Burren Farm); there are seven other smaller lots ( 20/30 acres) granted to lower-ranking army personnel and emancipists.
