Obituary in Jewish Chronicle:

Mr. EDWARD MAGNUS.

It is with deep regret, which will be shared by a very wide circle, that we have to record the death of Mr. Ed ward Magnus, which took place, after a pro-tracted illness, at his residence, 51, BeresfordRoad, Canonbury, on Wednesday, after a portion of the present issue had gone to press. The deceased, who was seventy-flve years of age, was formerly in business as a boot and leather factor in Spital Square. Mr. Magnus had lived all his life in London, and knew every-thing about Jewish matters in the metropolis. He was full of reminiscences of old- time characters, and there were not many East End figures of a past generation concerning whom he had not an interesting anecdote to tell. Mr. Magnus, like his late relatives, Mr. Henry Magnus, and Mr. Joseph Magnus (some time Treasurer of the Burial Society of the United Synagogue), was an excellent amateur Chazan, and gave his services in this capacity to a number of metropolitan synagogues, gladly helping them in any emergency. He will be best remembered, however, for his ten years' devoted service as Jewish lay visitor to the London Hospital, where he succeeded the late Mr. I. M. Myers. Mr. Magnus was wonderfully successful in collecting money and .gifts in kind in order to entertain the Jewish patients on the High Festivals. He also provided them with treats on the occasion of Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee and the Coronation of King Elward. He retired from the post about a year ago on his removal to Canonbury. His illness was largely due to the shock he received last year when he was assaulted after leaving the Hospital.
