Excerpted from a message at http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.mozingo/rss.xml:

It is well established that most anyone with the name Mozingo/Monzingo/Montzingo in America can be traced back to Edward Mozingo, Angolan/black servant belonging to John Walker - his english/white father in law bought his freedom with 2000 pounds of tobacco. Edward had a grandson name Charles Mozingo listed as a Mullatto in court records that served in the revolutionary war. His daughter Catherine is my fifth great grandmother.

Edward or possibly his father was probably christened as "Duarte Mozingo" in his native Angola land. It is *speculated* that during the Portuguese Congo Wars our Duarte Mozingo was captured and sold into slavery to a Portuguese trader and headed for Mexico. The English captured the slave ship and "liberated" the Angolans bringing them to Colonial Virginia in the early 1600's. These native Angolans were put into indentured servitude with the english settlers and many of them eventually earned thier freedom. Some took english wives and had families of thier own, eventually moving to the foothills of Tennesse or other remote areas having been run out of the increasingly racist and white society.
Over time and succesive generations this african heritage had been hidden and forgotten by the descendants who by all appearances were white.
In the begining of this research into family tree i was also skeptical and doubtfull of my own heritage being anything but European in origin. Because thats what I'd been fed by my parents, and grandparents etc...
