THE PRIDDLE FAMILY AND THE ANGLO-BOER WAR 1900-1902

Edward PRIDDLE surrendered in JUL / AUG 1900. He is taken up in the Zeerust Town Guard. In JAN and FEB 1901, he follows the Zeerust Town Guard to the Orange River, leaving his family behind and interned in the Mafeking British Concentration Camp. Edward submits a claim for compensation to the British Government for losses incurred due to theft by British soldiers at his property in Zeerust after he surrendered. Edward dies on 14 JAN 1904 at age 52 at Zeerust, Transvaal. He left behind his wife and 7 children.

Edward's wife, Anna (Johanna) Christina PRIDDLE, born CARR, is at home when British soldiers steal property from her home in Zeerust after her husband surrendered in JUL / AUG 1900 and left with the Zeerust Town Guard. She and 5 of her 7 children are interned at the Mafeking British Concentration Camp in the Cape Colony on 25 NOV 1900. Her camp unique ID number is 67476 and her name is registered as Anna Christina PRIDALE. She is recorded as being 49 years old. They remain in the camp untill 11 FEB 1902. A total of 1 year, 2 months and 17 days.

Anna Christina COETZEE born PRIDDLE was registered as Mrs Anna Christina COETZEE and her unique camp ID number is 64038. She is recorded as being 22 years old on arrival at the camp and the wife of Mr Christian Johannes COETZEE, whose unique camp ID number is 64037. Anna and Christiaan arrived at the camp on 24 JUN 1901, but he is transferred to Lobatsi on the same day. He is recorded as being 23 years old on arrival at the camp. Christiaan died in 1910, leaving her with 6 children. In 1912, Anna is in Beira at the time of her brother, Edward's death. She died in 1914 and left behind 5 minor children in an orphanage in Bulawayo. One child had died and she had re-married to Moses MORGANSTEIN, but they had no children.

Margaretha Wilhelmina PRIDDLE was registered as Margerita Wilhelmina PRIDALE and her unique camp ID number is 67477. She is recorded as being 19 years old on arrival at the camp. She is incorrectly recorded as the mother of Mrs Anna Christina PRIDALE. She is her daughter. She married William Henry Edward BROOKS, widower of Alida Maria COETZEE, who had passed away in APR 1904 leaving behind 4 minor children. He was the brother-in-law of Anna Christina COETZEE and Louisa COETZEE, sisters-in-law of his late wife, Alida and sisters of his wife, Margaretha. William and Margaretha had 11 children. William passed away in 1960 and Margaretha in 1967.

Edward PRIDDLE was registered as Eduard PRIDALE and his unique camp ID number is 67478. He is recorded as being 13 years old on arrival at the camp. He died in 1912 in Johannesburg and was working as a gardener at the age of 27 years and unmarried.

Robert PRIDDLE was registered as Robert PRIDALE and his unique camp ID number is 67479. He is recorded as being 12 years old on arrival at the camp. In 1912, at the time of his brother, Edward's death, he is in Salisbury, Rhodesia.

James PRIDDLE was registered as James PRIDALE and his unique camp ID number is 67480. He is recorded as being 10 years old on arrival at the camp. In 1912, at the time of the death of his brother, Edward, he was in Zeerust, Transvaal. According to Albert Edward BROOKS, son of Margaretha, he had one leg amputated at the knee and was a hairdresser.

Alfred PRIDDLE was registered as Alfred PRIDALE and his unique camp ID number is 67481. He is recorded as being 6 years old on arrival at the camp. In 1904, at the time of his father's death, he is in a Reformitory in Heidelberg and in 1922 he is convicted of theft and sent to prison, however this was not his first conviction. He was married at the time. He was a hairdresser.

Louisa PRIDDLE died in 1933 at the age of 58, having suffered the loss of 3 of her children during her lifetime. She married Cornelis Johannes Stephanus COETZEE, the brother of Alida Maria COETZEE, the first wife of William Henry Edward BROOKS who married Louisa's sister, Margaretha Wilhelmina PRIDDLE.

Personally appears before me, Edward PRIDDLE, of Zeerust, who being duly sworn states:-

Some time last year, between the months of AUG and DEC, some of the troops belonging to Gen. Lord METHUEN's column entered my house situate at Zeerust, and removed there from the articles enumerated in the voucher marked A.

My wife was at the time of the taking of the articles engaged in washing outside the house. She remonstrated with the men who removed the articles, but to no purpose.

Eventually she complained to the authorities at the camp.

A certain C. DIETRICH was present when the complaints was made.
