About Edward James (Ted/Teddy) Roberts

All Blacks ID: #207

The son of Harry Roberts who toured Australia in 1884 as a member of the very first New Zealand side, E J "Teddy" Roberts was born in Wellington and educated at Brooklyn School. A half back who was sometimes used at first five eight, he was playing for the St James club, (coached by his father) when first selected for Wellington in 1910 as a 19 year old. He represented his province until 1914 when war service intervened, and from 1919 - 1923, though missing the 1922 season.

Teddy Roberts' All Black career started when he was chosen for the New Zealand side that toured California and British Columbia in 1913, making him and his father the first father and son All Blacks. Injury and illness prevented him from playing until the 6th game of that tour, but he made up for it the following season by appearing in all 11 matches on the 1914 tour of Australia. It was on this tour that he blossomed as an accurate short range goalkicker.

He toured Australia with the All Blacks again in 1920. His previous games for New Zealand had all been as halfback but he was selected this time as a five eight. Ironically, four of his six tour games, plus the match against Wellington when the side returned, were at halfback.

Teddy Roberts' All Black career ended in 1921 with the 2nd and 3rd tests against the Springboks, plus a match against New South Wales. He captained his country in the latter two matches.

A brilliant blindside attacker. Roberts stood 5' 6" (1.68m) and weighed 11st 41b (72kg). As well as his father, Teddy's brothers Harry Jnr (1909) and Len (1920) represented Wellington at Rugby. Teddy himself also played cricket for the province as a wicketkeeper in the 1910-11 season.
