Brief Biography

EDWARD THURSTON was born in 1617. He was a quaker of Newport, R. I. He was a freeman in 1655, commissioner in 1663, deputy 12 times between 1667 and 1686, and Assistant in 1675, '86, '90 and '91. Aug. 26, 1686, he signed with other Quakers an address to the King in regard to the writ of Quo Warranto. They desired to be excused from bearing arms, being a peaceable people and "willing to pay all just rates and duties for carrying on the commonwealth's affairs, etc."

Note: 30 Jan 1690, he with five other Assistants and Deputy Gov. Greene wrote a letter to William and Mary congratulating them on their accession to the crown, and informing them that since the deposition of Sir Edmund Andros, the former government under the charter had been reassumed; mentioning also the seizure of Andros in R. I. on his flight from confinement in Mass., and his return to Mass. on demand of that colony. He married June, 1647, Elizabeth, dau. of Adam Mott. He died Mar. 1, 1707, leaving a will dated Jan'y 11, 1704, which was probated Mar. 12, 1707, and names his sons Jonathan, Daniel, Samuel and Thomas; gr. son Edward, son of Edward; gr. dau. Elizabeth; sons-in-law Weston Clark and Ebenezer Slocum, and two gr. daus. Slocum.

Edward Thurston was the first of the name in the Colony of Rhode Island, and his marriage to Elizabeth Mott, the daughter of Adam and Elizabeth [Creel] Mott, on 16 Jun 1647, is the third on the record of the 'Society of Friends' at Newport. Edward and Elizabeth were the parents of 6 sons & 12 daughters.
