- Edwin Brandes was the son of Heinrich Brandes and his first wife, Agnes Sommerfeld.
- Margarete Brandes moved with his father and his stepmother, Gertrud (née Cerf) Brandes to Friedrichroda in 1928 and lived there until 1938, when he returned to live in Berlin. The story of his life between 1938 and 1944 is told in the Stolpersteine texts cited above.
- A Stolperstein was laid for Edwin Brandes in Berlin in 2011.
