About Edwin Dennis

Edwin was an architect and designed numerous schools and hospitals across the state of Texas. His chief works were the Frank Erwin Special Events center in Austin, the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, and the Bexar County Teaching Hospital affiliated with the Medical School at UT San Antonio. After graduation at the University of Texas at Austin in 1951, he spent the early years of his career in San Antonio where he principally designed elementary and secondary schools as well as hospitals, offices and private homes. THe last 18 years of his career were as a design architect for the University of Texas Systems. Edwin designed many buildings on the University of Texas campus, notably Engineering Science, Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, as well as remodeling the Texas Union and Custer House.

He also designed buildings on the UT El Paso, UT Arlington, UT Dallas and UT Tyler campuses.

Those in the family will also note that he designed the new building for Lakeview Baptist Church in San Antonio.

Wilbur Edwin Dennis was born February 2, 1923, in Vernon, Texas. The long time Austin resident died on Saturday, January 31, 2004, in McKinney, Texas. Edwin was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved, adored and now joins his wife of 44 years, Grace Ellen Robin Dennis, who preceded his death. He is survived by daughters, Laura Dennis Smith and husband, Dennis, and Robin Rosemary Dennis; as well as by grandchildren, Amanda Michelle and Kyle Jeffrey Smith. Other survivors include his brother, LaVerne Dennis and wife Norma Lee; and his sister, Aleene Thompson and husband, Bill, both of San Antonio; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Mr. Dennis was an architect and designed numerous schools and hospitals across the state of Texas. Edwin was a dear parent and friend. We will miss him tremendously.
