About EDWIN HARRISON born 1836..Inside the front cover of the Family Bible appears this barely decipherable note: "This will certify that I officiated at the live birth of Edwin Harrison on the 21st day of Dec 1836 Newcastle. Ambrose Aspley ? Surgeon. Esther Mott." In the1851 census, Edwin is described as an apprentice .In November 1854 he received a medallion of Queen Victoria Regina, sculpted by William Wyon, as a prize from The Department of Art & Science. {See both the Family Bible & medallion at the Freshford House Museum, Kelner Street, Bloemfontein} In 1861, he is described as a photographer, and is living with his parents in the High Street as before. However in 1891 he is living with his own family at 77 Liverpool Road, Newcastle under Lyme. He is 54 years old and a photographer, while Hannah his wife is 56 years old. His eldest is Annie Jane and she is 28 and an artist (painting, sculpture); while Alfred William is now 26 and is also described as a photographer. John Edwin Harrison, is now 20 years old and described as a student of architecture. Sarah Gosling is present as a visitor, she is Hannah's younger sister, aged 44 and a governess. Their third child, a daughter Evelyn Alice Harrison had died in August 1890 from Tuberculosis. In the 1901 Census Edwin is living at 77 Liverpool Street Newcastle under Lyme with his second wife Annie Harrison (1847) who is ten years younger than himself.,
Three thank-you letters to Edwin Harrison: (1) July 9 1866 from Marlborough House, Pall Mall, S W. : Mr M Holzmann presents his compliments to Mr E. Harrison and begs to inform him that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has been pleased to accept the two photographs taken on the occasion of the laying of the new STAFFORDSHIRE INFIRMARY. His Royal Highness has instructed Mr Holzmann to thank Mr Harrison and to request him to send six more copies of each photograph. (2) Mourning envelope: May 13 1867: Sir, I am directed by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the photograph offered by you for her inspection. I am Sir, Your obedient servant, Herbert Fisher. (3) Sir Thomas Biddulph has received the Queen's command to thank Mr Harrison for the photographs which accompanied his letter of the 18th instant.
